More flowers ...
"Shout joyful praises to God all the earth! Sing about the glory of his name. Tell the world how glorious he is! Say to God, 'How awesome are your deeds.'" PSALM 66:1
"Flowers are the sweetest things God ever made and forgot to put a soul into." Henry Ward Beecher
Ancient Christians (rightly) thought that God did put souls into flowers; they were just vegetative, rather than animal or reasonable as well. Either way, though, it is a nice quote.
I hesitated to use this quote because of the theological implications of God "forgetting" anything ... but Scripture does say that He chooses to "forget our sins." I can't really get my mind around that, and God is so much more than what we realise ... and I loved this little quote from the minute I read it. I think MacDonald and Lewis agreed with the ancient Christians you have studied as well.
