August 2 DTJ with Brendan

Saturday:  Brendan was up quite late last night (until almost 1AM) writing his book. I finally convinced him to turn out lights and try to sleep--which he did. I wondered if he would sleep in this morning, but he was awake and eating breakfast with me by 8:00. We didn't eat anything fancy--just cereal and toast. And then we played a few games.

I ran a few choices by Brendan this morning as to what we should do with the rest of our morning and early afternoon--I added the ZOO into the mix; but Brendan chose Deer Tracks Junction -- it has been a long time since he has been out there.

Brendan gave me a recap of his novel while we ate breakfast.
We squeezed in a very LONG game of Battle Box ... we just couldn't seem to get past the blockades we had made against each other--which ended up hindering our own strategy as well! But it was fun anyway. Brendan ended up winning by a close margin.
We left for Deer Tracks around 10:30. Thankfully, it is only about a 15 minute drive from my house. I wondered how crowded it would be out there on a beautiful Saturday morning. It wasn't crammed with people at all--I was relieved!

I have ZERO criticisms of this beautiful "park" ... I wish I could work here part time. I am 100% happy here! This place is so clean, friendly, innovative, FUN ...
Brendan climbed and climbed and climbed, all the way to the top (see him below?) ...
While Brendan was climbing, I fed this beautiful deer. It was making the most unheard of noises! I had no idea deer vocalized in this manner at all! It almost sounded like a dog with a head cold!
There are some sturdy stairs you can climb ... they only go about halfway to the top of this apparatus--the rest is all rope ladders and tunnels (which I used to do ten years ago!) ... but I don't dare do it now. Anyway, this was a pretty nice height to take a good picture of Deer Tracks.
This little deer kept "barking", so I kept feeding it carrots ...

This play area is quite large, so I was wandering around (ground level) while Brendan was exploring the tunnels. I heard someone saying, "Grandma! Grandma! Over here!" I looked DOWN, and there was Brendan!

There is so much fun stuff to do out here. Brendan explored here for close to an hour! I remembered that I had one of those cool head flashlights that I grabbed before we left my house. It's really a bright light. Brendan liked it a lot.

I finally talked Brendan away from the tunnel play area and into the Budgie pavilion. We stayed here and fed these beautiful birds for almost an hour ...

I love these birds! So do children of all ages! I only noticed very small children shying away from the birds landing on them.

Brendan is super gentle with animals and enjoys them so much.

I loved watching him interact with these dear birds.

We probably could have stayed another HOUR just in this pavilion--however, we ran out of bird food; so we finally moved on.
The goats always crack us up ...

Then we went to check on the rabbits. They are incredibly soft.
I named this little one, "Butterscotch" because his color is exactly that!

Look how adorable it is! Brendan loved it too.
We visited the little pigs and dumped our remaining carrots on them ...
Look at the antelope!
Aren't they cool?
We walked down Llama Lane briefly ... Brendan managed to find a carrot or two in my camera case to feed to them.

I had such a great time out here with Brendan. We finally got too hungry to stay any longer. We drove back to my place and had hot dogs and root beer floats for lunch ... and then it was time to drive Brendan home.

I took 276 pictures in the 24 hours we were together ... yikes!
