December 8 at my house

Tuesday:  I'm so glad today worked out for the kiddos to come to my house! The plumbers arrived eactly at 8:30 and had all of the problem fixed by 9:30. I was able to "clean up" and pick the children up at 10:30 and return them here to me!

I moved the Kincaid Christmas tree to the round table (for closer supervision ... last week the reins got pulled off Santa's sleigh, and there were a few too many little hands touching the trains, etc.). We played the music and watched the trains go round during our lunch and snack times.
The children did a lot of what they always do when they are at my house. I love watching their play.

Also, I'm thankful I have enough toys to actually satisfy each curiosity and avoid too much conflict while playing.
Erin is always in hot pursuit of Matey-Bird ...

I love these pictures of these dear children!

The toddlers enjoyed many bowls of cereal today ... they wanted them all mixed together: Cap'n Crunch Berries, Cocoa Puffs, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Honey Maple Cheerios ... oh my!

Brendan folded Origami creations ...

... and all of the kids played with the magnet tiles (although I have no pictures to prove it) for hours and hours today, making all kinds of neat stuff. So thankful for this beautiful day with these guys.

December 7 Stuff

Monday:  Today I had a very easy, fun, relaxing kinds of "chores" to do: i.e. laundry, organizing my pantry, general cleaning ... and things were going very well until ...

GLUB ... GURGLE ... GLUB sounds came out of my kitchen sink as the washing machine was in the middle of a cycle. I have heard these sounds before, and they are never good tidings. However, since I live 90% in denial, I went on with what I was doing without investigating further. Sigh. That came to an abrupt end when I opened the front bathroom door to find water all over the floor there. Rats. Plumbing has always been an issue here.

I called my go-to all-around best worker ever--Jim--and told him what was going on. I tried the garbage disposal, only to have one sink back up into the other (I have a double kitchen sink). I didn't dare try to flush a toilet, but I did take note that there wasn't a drop of water in the front toilet. I told all of this to Jim. Since the "park" has regular and recurring plumbing issues due to the many trees and the millions of roots that have infiltrated all of the pipes around here--he suggested that I call the plumbing company that the "park" works with. You see, if the plumbing happens to be an outside-the-house problem, the park is responsible to pay for the repairs.

I called the plumbers and the dispatcher told me she didn't think she could find anyone to come to my place today--they are pretty booked all week. I explained the situation, and told her that Tuesdays are my grandchildren day, and she was very kind and said she would get back with me. I wandered briefly through the house, kind of dispairing ... and then I stopped and prayed. I asked the Lord to help the plumber arrive and fix the problem this afternoon!

Voila'! They showed up! It WAS an outside problem, and they fixed it! I called the plumber's office thanking them for their great service! I was SO happy.

But wait ... after the trucks drove away (after I had run the kitchen sink and flushed both toilets as they asked me to do), I resumed doing laundry. Pooh. More GURGLE and GLUB sounds from the kitchen sink ... and water EVERYWHERE. I called the plumber back. The dispatcher answered, the same friendly lady I have already spoken to twice today. Sadly, it is now 4:30 in the afternoon. She cannot get anyone out here now until tomorrow morning between 8:30 and 9AM. So for now, it looks like my Tuesday plans with the little kids is being messed with.

On a happier note, Matey-Bird entertained me in the sink (this was BEFORE the gurgling began) playing with his toys (straws--he's obsessed with them) for awhile this morning. Last Friday, he played for a full 10 minutes and took a very thorough shower in the process too. Today, he was not at all interested in getting his body wet whatsoever.
That's OK because he is still cute.
Tomorrow's plans are kind of ... tentative. Either the plumbers will come nice and early and completely fix the plumbing and THEN I can go pick up the little kids and bring them over--OR--I may have to take care of the kiddos at their house instead of mine. Right now, I can't even flush a toilet ... that would not be a good thing with little ones around.

December 6 with Emma

Saturday Night/Sunday:  We took Kaity back to Diana by about 8:00 and then came back to the Beach House for the night. We usually hang out for awhile. I had some picking up to do around here, and Emma was doing some business on her phone. We finally settled down to a few episodes of "Once Upon a Time" ... which is sometimes depressing, if I am honest! It's an interesting series, for sure--and I'm not sure who has written the storyline, but it takes twists and turns that I would never dream of.

We went to bed around 11:30 after talking for a little while together. I sensed that Emma was really struggling with "stuff" ... so I listened (and quietly prayed) while she talked. My heart surely goes out to her in this terrible year we have all lived through--but compounded so many times over for Emma in her particular situation. My heart ached so much as she talked through some of the things she thinks about--the challenges she faces on a daily basis.

I didn't sleep well afterwards, but that is okay. It spurred me on to pray, to beg the Lord for some relieve for Emma, for real healing of her heart and mind.

We worshiped at Calvary Sunday morning. One of the intern pastors spoke from Revelation 8.1: "When he opened the seventh seal, there was SILENCE in heaven for about half an hour." Marc's entire sermon was on the silence of God, the significance in our lives when we cannot hear Him or see Him ... when we have cried out and not received an answer or rescue. There was much more than that to what he taught, and all of it was good to be reminded about and to think through.

After church, we ate a good lunch and while I was cleaning up Emma fell asleep on the couch. She has been really tired lately, so I just let her sleep. I had planned to bake a special Christmas cookie recipe with her today, had all of the ingredients out a room temperature, etc. Hmm. What should I do? I decided to just go ahead and mix the dough together and start baking. This particular cookie recipe is one of my Grandma Mary's -- Russian Tea Cakes -- and Grandma's recipe is the best I have ever tasted. Emma did finally wake up enough to help me roll some of the baked cookies in powdered sugar, so that was just fine. It isn't like I needed Emma's help to bake cookies--it was just something I thought she might enjoy doing together.

It was apparent to me this weekend that I need to pray more specifically for Emma. I think in my own life, when I look back to the painful stuff (especially in my childhood) the only way I have received any "healing" from those scars is from His wounds. That may sound weird, but it truly isn't. Isaiah 53 talks about the suffering Jesus went through and it says this:  "Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows . . . he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed."  Those enormous losses Emma has experienced that have hurt her so deeply, I'm asking Jesus to take those to His own heart and give her His peace deep inside her. Please use all of this for her good, Lord--and for Your glory.

December 5 with my girls

Saturday:  I picked Kaity up first Saturday and then we swung by to get Emma. We spent about 4.5 hours together in the mid-afternoon to evening. Once again, we did a lot of stuff in that short amount of time. Kaity and I played a few rounds of foosball, Kaity winning two out of three! Emma was not interested in playing that particular game because ... she admits to being a sore loser AND she stated Kaity and I have had much more practice time than she has, so it was not an even playing field.

Kaity and I also played chutes and ladders. My particular version of it is a puzzle that has to be assembled first, and then the play can begin. Emma let Kaity and I assemble the puzzle, but then she played with us and won. Kaity kept getting swept down the same slide -- 3x in a row! The only thing that comforted her a little bit was that I had been leading until I slid down the longest slide on the board, putting me almost back to the start.
We also played a few Memory games. Emma won both of them without much trouble. I always lose in Memory ... I'm not much competition, but it is a very good game for me to play (being that I am an old lady and my memory isn't as sharp as it used to be).
We also played a few rounds of "LIAR, LIAR" which is a really cute game. Kaity was patient through both rounds of that game, even though she lost both times. Good job at losing, Kaity. It is a wonderful quality to be able to lose a game and be a good sport about it.
I totally forget to take pictures until nearly the end of our time together--then I grabbed my camera and just snapped a few.
I love these girls so much. I won't even try to explain the kind of year they have had--so much has happened in their family, so much interruption and disappointment due to COVID, and just life being hard in general. I'm thankful they still come over for visits. I love my time with them.
Our star search:  On our way out the front door, Kaity reminded me that tonight I promised we would go looking for the star. To explain--last Christmas season, we noticed a very beautiful and brightly shining star (not a heavenly one) just to the north of where I live. We would notice it once we drove out to Canonsburg and got beyond a little bunch of trees. When Kaity and I went hunting for the house where it was attached, we absolutely could NOT find it last year. We tried 2 or 3 different times. We concluded that somehow some way, people must have attached it to something BEHIND their house--not able to be viewed from the front when driving down their street.

Anyway, this time Emma was with us. She reminded me how completely direction-challenged I am (thanks, kid) and told us we would find the star's owner nearer to the golf course. So we drove that direction using various side streets, but lost track of the star amongst the trees and couldn't find it again. By this time, we were on 7 Mile--no star to be seen. I heard dear Kaity in the back seat: "Dear Jesus, please let us find the star tonight!" After hearing that, there was NO WAY I was giving up our search until the star could be found. I told the girls that I had an odd feeling that we should continue east on 7 Mile and  turn down Chauncey heading south back in the direction of my house. Because ... isn't Chauncey a very curvy, crooked, rather wind-y street?

Sure enough! As we turned down Chauncey and went around the first curve, we could clearly see the star shining through the trees. We passed it by, drove into the back entrance to the park where I live and followed the streets back as far as we could get. There was the star above and behind us ... apparently attached to a garage ... how could we get to that house? I drove back out of the park, back up Chauncey, and the first driveway to the left was a very dark and L-O-N-G drive, curvy too, SO SO dark ... should we turn and take it? YES! The girls were both in agreement that we HAD to find out for sure if this was where the star lived. We drove up the long narrow road to the very top, where security lights immediately went on as we drove past an out-building and right next to that building was a garage with the star (as big as the side of the garage) shining super bright. Thank-you, Lord! Mystery solved. We all slept better because of finding it!

December 3 with my KT-Girl

Thursday:  Kaity's school is still closed due to COVID (she actually returns to in-person school tomorrow), so I picked her up from Jesse today at 2:00 to give us a little extra time together. A lot is going on in Kaity's life presently. COVID is a super big deal when you are in the second grade and cannot attend school--virtual school doesn't work very well at this age, at least not with Kaity's type of kiddo.

Plus, Kaity is the only child going back and forth between Jesse and Di--she does really well with it, I think, but still ... it is a lot for a little child to handle, no matter what. Thanksgiving happened without me seeing Kaity this year; plus, the prior Saturday she had been out of town with her mom--so almost 10 days had gone by without spending time with her. The extra time that was given to us today was good.

I didn't take many pictures of Kaity today. She was pretty much in high gear throughout the entire time and moved quickly from one activity to the other--but sometimes that's just how she enjoys herself. I try to keep up with her, but sometimes I struggle! These pictures represent a rare three minutes when she was quiet and settled enough in front of the toy nativity that I quickly grabbed my camera and captured some of the moment.
For some reason, Kaity doesn't tolerate me telling her stories--unless they are personal stories about my life that are humerous. I would love to use these little figures and briefly tell her the beautiful Christmas story--but Kaity says she "knows" that story and wants to move on ... we DO move on but my heart is always a bit sad that we can't "review" this amazing story time and time again.
So how DID we fill up five hours together? Let's see ... we played with Lily and Liam for awhile. It seems that Liam fell off the top bunk bed and now has a broken arm! And Lily has broken her leg (I forget how). So Lily had her wheelchair with her today. We DID make a couple of PhotoBooth videos of Kaity and her babies--they were pretty funny too. I'll have to check to see if we snapped any still shots ...

We DID! I had forgotten this one! We played back in the playroom for awhile with bean bags and the game Emma made years ago out of cardboard. We also set up a pretty cool race car track here in the front room and raced cars for quite a long time! We ate our usual hot dog meal and enjoyed a mini-ice cream cone for dessert. Before we knew it, it was time to drive Kaity back to Diana. I'll see her again on Saturday.

December 2 A super nice Tuesday

Tuesday:  It's been SIX very long weeks since these little ones have been able to come over to my house! But now I am fully recovered, no more weight lifting restrictions, back to completely normal eating, and strong enough to entertain these guys over at my house.

I picked up the kiddos at 9:30AM and we came right over here to play. I think just about every toy in my house got played with! They were all delighted with the Christmas decorations and had fun finding the ornaments of themselves on my tree. Aidan and Brendan got right to building a train layout.
They worked at opposite ends, so it worked out ...

Aidan was entralled with the Thomas Kincaid ceramic train ... I had to watch him like a hawk as it is a little bit fragile. I'm not sure how it happened (and it doesn't matter), but part of it ended up in my "toy hospital" for repairs ...
Since it was still morning when we arrived here, the kiddos all had a bowl or three of cereal and milk.

Brendan's request was a combination of Cinammon Toast Crunch, Cocoa Puffs, and Capt'n Crunch Berries ... I can't imagine those three together in one bowl, but Brendan was very pleased.
Mr. Aidan didn't come for his cereal until Brendan and Erin were finished and I had all the cereal put away and the table cleaned off ... hmm ... BUT he did finally come and had exactly what Brendan had!
Speaking of Brendan ... he requested that I get out my number transformers for him to play with. I'm so glad! He played with them, on and off, throughout the day. I have numbers zero through nine, and you can combine numbers zero through four to make a huge robot, and then you can combine numbers five through nine to make another huge robot. BUT ... it takes a lot of patience to put it all together because there are lots of parts. I keep them all together in a bin for Brendan so that the pieces don't get lost. I've kept all of the instructions, too, and Brendan says that's what helps him put it all together. The instructions don't help me one bit! I cannot combine these numbered robots to make a big robot for anything. I can barely get the individual numbers to transform!

Darling Erin was delighted to be at her grandma's today. She loves it here. She followed Matey-Bird around today and just roamed from room to room with her dimpled hands touching everything she could ... she is the sweetest little thing.
Both of the little kids got their clothes soaked while eating their cereal and milk, so I had to find spare dry shirts in my kids' dresser--all of them were huge on Aidan, but we threw the wet shirts in the dryer and then put them back on.
Aidan really enjoys these little ice cream cones ... I wish I could get him to eat REAL food like this!

Would you believe that we actually spent nearly SEVEN hours here and never once turned to technology for entertainment? YAY! Not one single computer video was even requested! I am so pleased!

December 1 Origami picture frame ornaments

Monday:  I had zero responsibility for grandchildren today, so I spent most of the day fussing around my house, cleaning and organizing, to prepare for three little ones to come tomorrow. I did a fun Origami project, making picture frame ornaments and filling them with my beautiful grandkids' pictures.

These are the 12 I made for the O'Pahman group:

This is the bunch I made for the Pahman group:
24 picture frame ornaments for my tree!
Here are a few close-ups:

They look nice on my tree! Perhaps a bit large, but I like them very much.

I will need to make a few for my Matey-Bird when I have some extra time! We certainly wouldn't want to leave him out!
