August 30 Mackinac Island

Saturday: AHHHHHHH ... finally! We crossed the straits (kind of) and landed on THE ISLAND. Happiness! What a perfect day to be there! Yes, it was Labor Day weekend and we expected it would be super crowded--but we did NOT care. And actually, since we arrived so early in the day we kind of got used to the crowds as they filtered in throughout the day.

I took about five zillion pictures on the island. Surprisingly, my camera battery died after I took a half dozen pictures! I had it fully charged when we left my house the day before; but perhaps it was because I took so many pictures coming up to the island. Anyway, thankfully my phone takes very decent pictures.

As I look through all of these pictures, it seems that no matter where we were--either in transit TO the island, ON the island, or LEAVING the island--the Bridge completely dominates! I have so many great pictures of it now, and I am super pleased about it.

Here are a "few" pictures I took while on the island. I won't do much narration since "pictures say a thousand words"; but I have to say that being there with my brother, David, was 100% complete and total happiness.

When we got off the ferry, though, the smell of horse manure hit is in the face like a brick--apparently we arrived earlier than the pooper scooper workers ... it was kind of everywhere (the poop). Thankfully, that negative was taken care of within the hour!

Aren't these flowers beautiful lining the walkway of this house?

This is SUCH an entry, don't you think? Smack dab right out of a fairy tale ... or at least The Hobbit.
We took a nice, long walk towards the Grand Hotel with me snapping picture with every step. Here are a few that I took:

I will post a lot more pictures of the Round Island Light in a separate post because I actually got quite a few good photos from different locations. These are all from that road on the Island ...

See these large boulders? Somewhere around here, for reasons totally unknown and bizarre to me, I put down my purse while I was taking pictures ...
I LOVE this picture of David.

Aren't the clouds so amazing?

I didn't realize that I no longer HAD my purse until we left the rocky area and went back to the road. Thankfully, I remembered it before we had walked too very far. I panicked (of course), but David traced the last time I had my purse and figured out that it must be back on the rocks. He was right! We returned to the rocks and found it un-stolen, un-robbed of money, and completely where I left it. Thank you, Lord!

Aren't these gorgeous homes? My favorite is the green one with the round room (below).
This is one of the kinds of "taxis" that are available around the island. Hence the pooping horses.

Such a beautiful place!
It was right about here on our walk that we wondered if we perhaps missed a turn in the road that would lead us UP to the Grand Hotel. And we were right about that! I have a separate post about the GRAND. But for now, after we finished up at the hotel (where the cheapest thing to eat for lunch was a $17 hotdog)--we had to give up the idea of lounging around on their giant porch sipping soda, enjoying the amazing view, eating chicken salad (!!) ... so we hailed a "taxi" and went back into town.

This is the rest of what we saw on the Island:

We opted to take a "taxi" back into town to grab a bite to eat there instead of at the hotel. I look like I've seen better days; but actually, this is one of the happiest days I've had in a very long time!
The "Little Stone Church."
We ate our meal at "Great Turtle Brewery" and enjoyed every single bite. I cannot for the life of me remember what it was I ordered and consumed; but trust me--it was GOOD.
We didn't buy a single slab of fudge! Can you even believe it? Me either! Each fudge shop was quite generous with samples, though; so we did taste quite a few. The samples were about as large as my little fingernail!

It's always fun to watch the making of the fudge ... glad we got to do that.
By about 4:30, we figured we had shopped at just about every retail shop on the island. David did purchase a baseball cap on the island with a very nice rendition of the Mackinac Bridge. I bought a pair of jogging pants that are super comfortable (light grey) and will replace the light grey ones that I've worn the life out of in the last few years.

Look at the beautiful harbor on the island!
I got a bunch of pictures of it ... I love marinas!
This cruise ship was parked in this spot the entire day we were on the island. We looked up Great Lakes cruises on our phones and they are EXPENSIVE!

Let me show you a few photos of THE GRAND HOTEL next ...
