August 31 Grand Heaven

Sunday afternoon: We made it out to Grand Haven some time around 3:00 Sunday afternoon. It's one of my brother David's most happy places. Mine too! We walked the pier (naturally) and saw an endless parade of SO MANY beautiful boats.

Let me show you a few:

This first one reminded both David and I of one of the boats our family owned. I believe it was somewhere around 37 feet and was an Owens. Many good memories from trips taken on that boat--well, not exactly good but at least better than what was our normal life at home anyway.

David really liked this boat (below) and told me it was VERY high end and expensive AND amazingly seaworthy. I don't know anything about boats at all, so I really enjoy hearing details and cool stuff about them. David is like a boat encyclopedia! I love to listen to him.
Sailboats are always my favorite ... especially with their sails out (which never usually happens in the channel).

We walked to a few different places on the pier and sat at each spot for a nice long view of the boats. I could have stayed there for almost ever (well, almost!).

I climbed the stairs to the catwalk (as far as is allowed--the rest is prohibited by a fence and a stern warning) and took my usual picture of the pier from up there.
We watched this weird looking barge exit the channel ...

Then we walked the short distance to the beach where David flew the little kite he purchased up on the Island.
It's a very patriotic little kite ...

The wind wasn't as strong as David had hoped ... but I think he got it up in the air really well!
THEN we walked back along the pier for a bit before taking a little drive ...
We found the road (Prospect) that takes you UP and overlooks the channel from behind the dunes. It's a really pretty view and the homes up there are amazing.
We also visited a little shop and talked to the owner for a little while and ended up buying shirts from him. I love mine! David got one for himself and for Carol too.

I don't drive to Grand Haven very much--it's not really very fun to do alone ... and I NEVER stay for the sunset because ... well, I am ALONE. So it was a real treat to enjoy the sunset. See next post.
