December 30 A Done Deal

Friday:  Trumpets! Cymbals! Drumroll ...

Ruthanne and Terry closed the deal and are moving to Leisure Village, 1/2 mile from me in the north part of the park!!!! They came back to Grand Rapids today to give the owner the downpayment. Terry's brother, Ken, came along too--to further inspect the place. It's amazing to think of them moving here to Grand Rapids. What a blessing.

There is a lot of stuff that needs to happen before they fully move in ... like the sale of their home in Detroit and figuring out what to keep, what to sell, what to give away ... and what to pitch--all of which may take a few months. But since this house is empty, they can move in gradually. Terry is talking about adding a few walls outside in the carport (see above) to make a game room, where he can move in his very nice pool table.

Thank you, Lord, for working all of this out in such a short time!

December 29 Kaitlynn

Thursday:  I messaged Jesse today and asked if I should pick Kaity up ... or not. She has been a tiny bit difficult lately ... well ... not difficult; just NOT interested in doing anything once she is here. Almost like she would rather be somewhere else. I don't want to assume Kaity wants to come over just because I am her grandma (how uppity would that be?). Jesse told me that he really needed me to take Kaity this afternoon because he wasn't feeling well. Interestingly, he is getting closer to a diagnosis and possible treatment (which is encouraging) ... but that's for another post ... another day.

I prayed and asked the Lord to help me accommodate Kaity today in whatever way was reasonable. She came over and mostly stayed on her phone--but she wasn't snarky one bit. She was softer and kinder today than she was last week. I don't think my grandkids realize that I have feelings ... and sometimes my heart hurts when they are so cold and distant ... or sarcastic ... or unkind. Anyway--I'm a big girl and shouldn't be self-focused anyway!

As Kaity was busy on her phone, I did small tasks around the house and we chatted here and there. It was casual and comfortable and I wasn't offended one single bit by Kaity NOT playing with me. She ate a nice meal with me, we laughed about a few things, and just enjoyed a few quiet hours.

On our ride home to her mom's, I played the beautiful music that Kaity enjoys and listened to her sweet voice as she sang along. "His Mercy is More" is one of Kaity's favorites. Here are the lyrics:

"What love could remember no wrongs we have doneOmniscient, all knowing, He counts not their sumThrown into a sea without bottom or shoreOur sins they are many, His mercy is more
What patience would wait as we constantly roamWhat Father, so tender, is calling us homeHe welcomes the weakest, the vilest, the poorOur sins they are many, His mercy is more
Praise the Lord, His mercy is moreStronger than darkness, new every mornOur sins they are many, His mercy is more
Praise the Lord, His mercy is moreStronger than darkness, new every mornOur sins they are many, His mercy is more
What riches of kindness He lavished on usHis blood was the payment, His life was the costWe stood 'neath a debt we could never affordOur sins they are many, His mercy is more
Praise the Lord, His mercy is moreStronger than darkness, new every mornOur sins they are many, His mercy is more
Praise the Lord, His mercy is moreStronger than darkness, new every mornOur sins they are many, His mercy is moreOur sins they are many, His mercy is mоre"

Songwriters: Matt Boswell / Matt Papa
There are such great lines in this song ... it's SO powerful to think about the Lord NOT adding up our sins; but instead, throwing all of them into a bottomless sea. Our sins are SO many, but His mercy is MORE. What a relief that is!
As we sang these words together, I got chills ... because God sent such comfort to my heart for dear Kaity. I have prayed that Kaity would come to saving faith in Jesus as her Savior and Lord. I believe that some day Kaity will understand that Jesus died for HER sins and then she will give her life to Him and seek to obey Him all her life. What a difference Jesus makes when we bow before Him.
"Praise the Lord, His mercy is more. Stronger than darkness, new every morn. Our sins they are many, His mercy is more." Thank you so much, Lord Jesus.

December 28 Unbelievable?!

Wednesday:  A few weeks ago (a VERY few), Ruthanne and Terry put an unusual and frankly totally unexpected question to me. Would I mind very much if they moved to Grand Rapids ... if they looked for a house at Leisure Village?

WHAT?!?!?!

You could have knocked me over with a very light breeze. Seriously?

This was Ruthanne's idea evidently. The last time they were in Grand Rapids (quite recently), Ruthanne had gone into my bedroom to use my "master bath" (which is tiny but nice) and remarked about how nice my little house is ... how adequate ... how cozy ... how much storage I had, etc. I agreed with her and didn't think anything more about our conversation.

But then ... she called one afternoon and asked me the above question. And Terry too was inquiring. They asked a bunch of questions about this place and asked if I could look and see if there were any homes available.

Then Christmas happened. Ruthanne and Terry flew down to Georgia to be with Shari and Mark and kiddos and were gone for a week. In their absence, I did talk with the office manager here at the park and just asked about availability, etc. She said there wasn't really anything available ... except for one double-wide--but then she said she thought the owner was "asking too much" for it and we both blew it off.

However, I talked to Ruthanne and Terry a day or too later and casually mentioned that home to them. They asked me to find out more information--which I did. And then they flew home to Detroit and today they drove up to take a look at the house that is for sale--through the park management.

The house was a total DUD. We hated it. Definitely a smoker's house--it wreaked of smoke. We were given a "tour" by our park manager (in charge of the sale) and we were polite and took our time with her but basically declined pursuing anything further with that particular house.

We decided to just take a little drive through the park and have a look around. I thought it would be fun to just show them the rest of the area--because there is a south side of the park (where I live) and a north side too. We drove up and down the streets, casually commenting about which houses were pretty and which ones were junky ... and suddenly Ruthanne said: "That one's for sale!" And she was right! The "For Sale" sign had phone numbers, which Terry called and the owner agreed to meet us in one hour to show us inside the house. This house was being sold by owner, not through the park sales.

Meanwhile, we looked it over on the outside and discovered the house was completely empty ... and a much nicer house than what we had just looked at. We could see in the windows on the front of the house and liked the openness of the layout--the kitchen looked super nice, and it flowed right into the main room.

Here's a picture of the outside!

This is a 3BR, 2bath house of approximately 1750 sq. ft. Don't you love the front porch? AND it has an extra long carport that is partially enclosed! At the far end of the carport is an attached work room with built in shelves and lots of nice storage space--the door to it was not locked; so we walked in and looked around.

When the owner came, she and her husband showed us all around the inside. It's SO NICE! It's a 2002 model and hardly looks like it has been lived in. I love the layout. Both Ruthanne and Terry felt very positive about it and said they would call the owner back tomorrow with an offer.

PS. That's exactly what happened. Terry made an offer that was accepted and Friday they are coming back to Grand Rapids to finalize the deal. I am so excited I can barely contain myself.

December 27 Four Again!

Tuesday:  It's two days after Christmas and school is still OUT for Christmas break. SO ... I picked up FOUR children today and drove them back to my place. Here are just a few pictures of our time together.

Brendan went into my finger puppet bin and retrieved Lambchop to put on top of my little railroad Christmas tree. He thought it would be funny to see him spin around with Santa and the reindeer--and it DID crack everyone up!

Look at Erin's expression--she is trying to figure out if Lambchop will actually stay put ... or will she fall?

Cal thought the entire thing was hilarious ... he's a honey!

Mr. Aidan Paul was quite amused as well ...

Little Cal didn't miss a trick with a vehicle in each hand ... he's happiest this way!
Cal makes very authentic VROOOM noises to correspond with each car ... he is very good at it.
We stayed at my house until almost 5:00 and then loaded up my car and returned to their house. The kiddos played really well together today. We did cheat, however, and watched "UP" which delighted everyone. Wee Cal fell soundly asleep in my rocking chair, all bundled up in a soft blanket. He missed the entire story.

Super thankful for these grandkids. I am a very blessed grandma.

December 25 Christmas Day

Sunday:  Our Christmas Day worship service was cancelled because of slippery, snowy roads ... so disappointing. Pastor Jim and a few of the worship team put together a 30-minute Christmas devotional on Youtube--which I watched and I'm glad I did. It was a blessing!

I went over to Dylan and Kelly's by about 11am. I had such a nice few hours with them and their little ones. I tried to get a picture of all four kiddos in front of their giant Christmas tree ...

The gift opening was a LOT of fun. Everyone seemed pleased with what was inside their wrapped boxes.
Little Cal was super delighted with his CARS ...
Aidan was really excited with his LEGO sets ...
Erin LOVED her unicorn family ...

Brendan was taken with the latest POKEMAN book ...
Cal kept trying to hold all six of his cars at once ... SO cute ...

Erin was super excited about her Jasmine doll that came with a special princess tiara and wand to match ...

Look at her darling little face ...

Cal's remote-control bus caused a bit of ruckus ... it was not as easy to operate as advertised and he refused ANY help, especially from his siblings ... but it all turned out just fine as time went by.
Aidan went write to work writing another "book" ... he kills me. I made him several blank books for him to use for his stories. I printed out a title page and an author summary (at the back of each book):

Here are a few more princess poses offered by Erin:

Erin lined up her little Unicorn family and gave them all a nice going over with her pretend blow dryer.

Uncle Shane arrived a little while after with MORE presents! He does a great job choosing gifts for these kids because he knows them and loves them. Little Cal opened his present to find a big floppy stuffed animal dog! Shane got Erin got the neatest doll I have ever seen: it talks and actually moves its lips realistically! Aidan received Minecraft LEGOS which he marched right up to his room for assembly in the days ahead. Brendan got a very cool video game controller and I think some more Pokémon cards.

Kelly put on a very wonderful meal. We had baked honey ham, wonderful beans and carrots, mashed potatoes and gravy and a marvelous apple pie for dessert. Yummy! I brought banana bread and French bread too.

I loved my hours spent with these guys so much. I left Dylan's right around 3:30 and drove over to Jesse's house. He has not been feeling well for several weeks in a row. Kaity was with him on Christmas Eve, but he was alone today. I spent about an hour with him and caught up with his news and some of his health concerns. I am praying he can get some answers in the weeks ahead that will help him make decisions about work and life in general.

Thank you, Lord, for leaving heaven to come to earth for us. Thank you for Your faithful love. Thank you for knowing us and loving us in spite of who we are or what we have done. Please come back soon, Lord.

December 24 Christmas Card

Christmas Eve:  Here is the card I designed this year to give to neighbors, friends and family.

Front:

Inside Card:  Lyrics to "The Promise" by Michael Card (1986). I have loved this song since the first time I heard it.

Back:

All of God's promises have been fulfilled IN CHRIST. Praise Him! What a wonderful Savior!

December 24 Gifts for Emma

Christmas Eve:  Last weekend, Chris and Ella, Matthew, and Kaity came over and opened Christmas presents. The boys just had $$ gifts, which is NO FUN at all ... but I had a few gifts Kaity opened. I told Emma that we would do her gifts this weekend. She suggested that we do it tonight--so we did.

It's difficult for me to describe these gifts, and I completely forgot to take pictures of them once they were unwrapped. Hmm. Emma first opened this ... contraption for easing back pain. She told me Chris has one and uses it--which is where she saw it and decided she would like one too. She showed me how it works and it's really ... interesting!

Emma also received some HAIR jewelry--I don't know how else to describe them. They are pretty coils that wrap into your hair, if you are talented enough to be able to figure out the process. I also ordered her some fasteners that you can use on fabric--she described them as MIDIEVAL.
And I also got her a small padded notebook that she uses to organize her paystubs and other important papers in. Nothing very exciting!
Since I have a set budget per grandchild--when they get old enough, they just go to Amazon and add a "Wish" list and then I am able to pick a few things from that list and at least get them a few things I know they will actually like. Much better than throwing money down the toilet on something they will never use, right? It's not an ideal set-up ... because "ideally" I would go to a store with each of them in mind and pick out something I think they would LOVE. However, MY method has failed enough in the past to where I have learned my lesson and now do it the "Wish" list way.

MERRY CHRISTMAS, dear Emma. You mean the world to me, granddaughter. How I wish I could make every dream of yours come true. Ah ... that would be foolish of me! I thank the Lord that He has you; and that if you are willing, He will make something truly beautiful of your heart and life. He is the only One who can do that for us! Probably half of our dreams are not what He would want for us anyway! His ways are perfect. His love for us is completely undeserved ... and eternally unending.
