Day Eight: We've arrived in Kerrville

After about a nine-hour drive today, almost all of it on I-10, we've arrived in Kerrville (in the county of Kerr, Texas). We've had dinner and are settling down for the night. We left Fort Bliss at about 8:00 a.m. this morning. The above picture was taken from the parking lot outside The Lodge on the base, and those are the Franklin Mountains. Jes and Di have a real nice view of them from the back yard of their house. It's always sad to drive away from here, each mile taking us farther and farther away from Jesse's family ... me, trying to remember every conversation with the children, all of the names and faces of people we met there in their neighborhood, each of their stories ...
For almost the first 100 miles of the drive, Mexico is the view out my window. The map of Texas I had in my lap didn't list the mountain ranges in Mexico, so I can't tell you what these are called. But they are very beautiful. I love watching the colors change and the clouds casting their shadows across the plateaus. In Michigan, now and again you'll see a dead deer along the highway ... well, we saw a dead wolf today just outside El Paso!
And the clouds! We watched the rain come down in sheets across the dessert all throughout our drive, running into a really strong downpour about 30 miles west of Fort Stockton. We could hardly see the road ahead! We replayed disc five of our novel, to kind of review the story for ourselves, and then played the next one as well ~ the rain was coming down so hard at times, I could hardly hear the narrator!

Kerrville is about a half hour from Bandera, where Nick and Rachel live ... but the hotel choices are better in Kerrville, so this is where we are staying. We drove down to Chili's tonight to see if Nick was working, but he'd already completed his work day and had gone home. The picture above is the sun setting behind the restaurant tonight. We are looking forward to driving over to Bandera tomorrow and seeing around the place! The last time we were in Texas, Nick and Rachel were still in San Antonio. We are looking forward very much to seeing them, and three little grandchildren as well!
