Our Sister's Retreat: Day One

My sister, Ruthanne, and I had a fabulous fifth annual sister's retreat. We checked into our motel in Traverse City at about 3:00 Monday afternoon, freshened up a bit, and then went to find Old Mission Point Lighthouse. Ruthanne brought a bunch of maps of the area, which were immensely helpful ... except the one she got through Mapquest of Old Mission Peninsula!

We faithfully followed each detail of the directions provided by Mapquest, but they put the lighthouse halfway up the peninsula, on the west side of the bay at Bowers Harbor~ but it wasn't there! No matter how many roads we traveled down, we did not end up at the lighthouse! We certainly saw a lot of this peninsula in the process. I had no idea there were so many beautiful barns! We pulled over on this dirt road so that I could snap a picture of these horses, and I didn't realize my glasses were on my lap when I hopped out of the car! But as we were driving away, I reached to put them on and ... oh no! I was so thankful when we turned around and Ruthanne found them lying in the middle of the road unharmed!
Mr. Jones and I were here ten years ago to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. I really should have remembered that the lighthouse was at Mission Point at the end of the peninsula! As we drove around the peninsula, we asked several folk for directions and they gave such ridiculous answers! But voila! We finally found the lighthouse.
We arrived here at 4:50 ~ ten minutes before it was closing for tours. We paid the small fee and wandered around the lighthouse and climbed the tower to see the view.
And what a spectacular sight ... rocks and sand and dunes, beach grass, and the bluest of blue Lake Michigan! Old Mission Lighthouse was built in 1870. The name refers back to an early Presbyterian mission located on the northeast side of the Peninsula that was established as an Indian mission in 1839.

We spent close to an hour here and took tons of pictures. I am really happy with them! From here, we went looking for dinner! We had both done a little bit of research on area restaurants because we wanted to enjoy good food at a reasonable price ... with a view, if possible! We briefly checked out The Boathouse, because it did have a view ... but it was pretty out-of-sight as far as its menu and prices were concerned. So we ate our dinner at The Bowery, a rustic little place down the road. We both ordered the deep fried perch, which was amazingly yummy!
Afterwards, we returned to Traverse and walked by the water along the bay for awhile. We stopped in and looked at all of the candles at the Candle Company.
Look at this sailboat! This is the best picture I was able to get of it ... too far away for my little camera!
We had a great first day of our retreat. We had no end of stuff to talk about and had such a good time catching up on each other's news! Stay tuned for the rest of our trip ...
