April 23 In Savannah, Georgia

Saturday Evening:  We left the lighthouse and beach and drove into Savannah to see the sites. We had no idea traffic would be so horrendous ... it literally took us 35 minutes of driving around street after street to find a parking place close to the Savannah River (which forms the border between Georgia and S. Carolina). But FINALLY, we found a spot! We were super hungry, so right away we went looking for a restaurant--there were several right on the river (kind of). We weren't quite prepared for the wait, but we actually handled it very patiently. It helped that we were seated at a bar with a very entertaining waiter. We ate delicious sea food (naturally) and then took a short walk along the river.

In the distance is the Talmadge Memorial Bridge that we crossed over to the port of Savannah.

Some day I would like to ride on a riverboat ...

While we were waiting for our food to arrive at the restaurant we heard one of those great ship horns blaring. I ran out of the restaurant, camera in hand, and shot just a few pictures of it. Container ships don't often come through the Great Lakes--at least I have never witnessed it.

Some close ups of the "Georgia Queen."

We had hoped to do a little bit of exploring and shopping in Savannah; but truthfully, I was so exhausted at this point that I was very glad when David suggested that we drive back to our hotel in S. Carolina and call it a night.
The view of Savannah from the bridge (below) ...
Some day perhaps I will return to Savannah and take it slower on a less crowded day. I've heard their graveyards (!!) and parks are quite interesting to explore ...
