Mini-Vacation, Riding the Marquette II

Tuesday, August 22:  (Incidentally my 65th birthday)  We booked our boat tickets through our hotel (because they offered a discount) Monday night. We went with Star Lines, which was the boat closest to our hotel. We saved $7 each that way, and it was a good deal. No exact times--you could come and go according to the daily boat schedule.
We decided to take the 9:00 am boat over to Mackinac Island. [Note to self:  They offer LIGHTHOUSE boat tours, some lasting FOUR hours, to FOUR different lighthouses! Something to seriously consider doing!] The Marquette II was the name of our ship! Emma had never been on a boat in her life before this.
We naturally chose the upper deck since we wanted some good pictures from that vantage point. We had such a blast. This ferry was one of those super powered ones--I hadn't expected that! Forty years or so ago when I was here (perhaps actually 50+), all the ferries were quite ... slow. This one took off VERY fast.
And look at the tail it spit out!

We even caught a prism rainbow or two if we were at just the right angle.
We got to boat UNDER the Mighty Mac! I was SO thrilled about that! I thought it would be a lot extra ($$) to do that!

Coming into the harbor at the island ... SO pretty!

We took the 3:30 ferry home--same exact boat. This time, though, we arrived at the dock about 25 minutes prior to departure. We wanted a guaranteed FRONT seat on the upper deck this time. On the way over to the island, we were at the rear.
The island had a pretty good soaking about 30 minutes before our ride home--lots of wind and heavy rain. It stopped just prior to us boarding the Marquette.

Going back to the mainland it was even windier than it had been coming over. Our hair was flying like crazy. Emma was not one bit afraid. She was quite comfortable and super happy throughout.

 Such a beautiful place ...

 Bye Mackinac Island ...
More about our island time in next post ...
